We’re not just tired. We’re grieving. For what we thought this country was. For what we’re becoming. And for the lies we wrapped in red, white, and blue. This isn’t burnout. It’s mourning. But even in grief, there’s fight.
"And by the way, please buy a flag. Hang it. We can all do that. They do not get to take our flag. Let every house fly one so no one can tell who lives inside. Every single house. I am no longer willing to see flags and think ‘they’ are owning the street I live on. Let them wonder who lives on the streets they think they own." - yes, this! I was talking with some friends and sharing that exact same sentiment, we need to reclaim the flag, they do not get to own it.
I can also resonate with the despair and apathy that seems so rampant today. It's hard to see greater and greater acts of atrocity every morning when I read the newspaper or as I get updates pushed to my inbox. I recently read Daniel Pink's book, "The Power of Regret" and two main takeaways that connect with what you wrote - first, we must cultivate our own garden (attributed to Voltaire), and second, we typically regret our inactions rather than our actions. So, for me this means I need to balance time when I need turn inwards with the times I turn outwards.
If you donate $20 to the USO, they send you a flag. I have been flying one for years because of the USO. And the years I don't need one, I give it to a school or someone who needs one.
Thank you for sharing your state of mourning, which many of us are feeling.
I love the advice about the flag. I agree 100%. We will buy one.
