American Memoir 2025
One woman's view of America 2025; a diarist marking this moment in our history, wherever it takes us.
We started out in July 2024 as a daily, "We the People Dispatch," including to-do's to help get the Harris-Walz ticket to the White House. The founder, Christine Merser, an author, continues with her take on what is the evolution of our democracy starting on January 1, 2025, and how she is managing the moments that will determine what nation we will become.
“Letters have always marked the defining moments of history. They are windows into the hopes, fears, and visions of those who lived through extraordinary times. As I reflect on where we are as a nation today, I think of Abigail Adams and the letters she wrote to John while the country struggled to find its footing. Those letters carried her fears but also her profound hope for the future.
“In one of those letters, she wrote:
"These are times in which a genius would wish to live. It is not in the still calm of life, or the repose of a pacific station, that great characters are formed. The habits of a vigorous mind are formed in contending with difficulties. Great necessities call out great virtues." - Abigail Adams
“Abigail’s words speak to me as we navigate the challenges of this moment. She understood that the hardest times also call forth the greatest strength. She believed, as I do, that how we respond to difficulties defines not just who we are but what we become as a nation.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg said, “When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty.” I see my duty going forward as taking notes on what I see around me and providing myself with vehicles for resistance, which is my duty. Yours too, right?
So, I’ll continue sharing my perspective on the struggles we face, the choices we make, and the future we are creating. These are the letters I’m writing to America, a way to preserve and reflect on the history we’re living right now.
I thank all of you who have supported We the People Dispatch, and for reaching out over the past month encouraging me to continue. I’m not afraid, and I’m up to the challenge. The only thing we are not allowed to do is give up. - Christine Merser
