Tiger Woods Showing Us How to Win
Tiger Woods doesn’t go around pounding his chest with the humiliation he faced at being denied access to the clubhouses as he played as a junior in the south. He said he got to the tournaments, put his shoes on in the parking lot, and then asked the first person he saw, “Where is the first tee, and what is the course record?”
Watch this video as he calmly walks us through his early playing years.
I watch this twice a week now. “Where is the first tee, and what is the course record?”
So here are my questions…
Who among you is on my side? Oh, not you, Amazon? Where else can I buy books? And, by the way, reminding myself that my local bookstore gets all of the profits when I buy there—if I had it delivered from Amazon, less than $1 comes to my community. I can wait for the books to be sent if they don’t carry them, just like Tiger could wait.
Susan Collins (my senator), are you voting all these evil people into power in the government? Oh, you are? Well, I will give, I will work, and I will get out the vote to send you packing as soon as possible. Quietly. Firmly. And I will take out ads in local papers. And I will talk to my neighbors, making sure they know you are the reason that our electricity (we get it from Canada) may go up 25% shortly.
Dunkin’ Donuts? You gave bundles of money to MAGA? My $6 a day, 300 days a year—or $1,800—is going to the local “Treats” shop, where, actually, the coffee is better and they now know my name. It’s a nicer morning.
Instagram? Facebook? Changing the algorithms so my political posts aren’t getting any reach? No worries. I will never click on another ad, buy anything from those on the platforms, and guess what else? I’m reporting all kinds of posts as spam. Let them have to review them. Quietly. Firmly. And, my goal is to take the platforms off my phone, but I do earn a living and need them a bit now. Quietly. Fiercely, I wait before I click.
And then every day I remind myself that Tiger Woods had unbridled discipline since he was a little human—discipline I’ve never seen in myself in all my seventy-something years. But guess what? I now have a real reason to have it, and fair warning to all—I got this. Every single day moving forward. And, I’m alive in a big way right now. And, I’m taking no prisoners.
I want this.
Do you?
I also watch this video once a week now. Beyonce at the concert at the Lincoln Memorial before the Obama Inauguration, 20008. I was there. Surrounded by a diverse American population. You know why I watch it? Because this is DEI in action. What are they afraid of? The talent? The brains? The drive? You can’t compete? DEI is a gift to all of us in this country. It makes us better, and stronger. And when I watch it, my day is better because no one is going anywhere.
DEI is not a leg up, it’s insurance that they will be allowed in the clubhouse.
This is it my friends. American Democratic Masters 2025, where democracy will ride on whether we win or lose. I know we can do this. I feel better each and every day that my new disciplined self stands tall.
Now if I only my favorite ice cream brand gave to MAGA. Bummer.
From a CBS Sport Article. What it says to me is that this has been around a long long time. All of it. White is what they want. A white America.
1997 -- Fuzzy Zoeller
Fuzzy Zoeller's comments are probably the most infamous of all. As Woods was rolling to his monumental win at the 1997 Masters, Zoeller, in a post-final round interview, had some interesting remarks about the 21-year-old.
"He's doing quite well, pretty impressive. That little boy is driving well and he's putting well. He's doing everything it takes to win. So, you know what you guys do when he gets in here? You pat him on the back and say congratulations and enjoy it and tell him not to serve fried chicken next year. Got it. Or collard greens or whatever the hell they serve."
2008 -- Kelly Tilghman (Golf Channel)
In 2008 during a broadcast on Golf Channel with Nick Faldo, who said younger golfers were going to have to "gang up" on Tiger to be able to take him off his perch as best in the world. Tilghman laughingly responded that they were going to have to "lynch him in a back alley."
The Woods camp almost immediately responded. Tiger's agent, Mark Steinberg, said the Tilghman remark was harmless.
2011 -- Steve Williams
At the 2011 caddies awards party in Shanghai after Adam Scott won the Bridgestone Invitational, Steve Williams was asked about why he called the win the "greatest victory of his career." He responded by saying he badly wanted to beat former employer, Woods.
"I wanted to shove it up that black arsehole."
Woods and Williams eventually made amends although Woods said he was disappointed by what Williams said.
“Stevie's certainly not a racist. There's no doubt about that. It was a comment that shouldn't have been made and was certainly one that he wished he didn't make.”
2013 -- Sergio Garcia
You all know about this one. In England on a Tuesday night, Garcia was asked about whether or not he would consider hosting Tiger at the 2013 U.S. Open that weekend. He said he would.
"We will have him 'round every night. We will serve fried chicken."
Woods responded via Twitter and, again, said he was disappointed.
"The comment that was made wasn't silly. It was wrong, hurtful and clearly inappropriate. I'm confident that there is real regret that the remark was made. The Players ended nearly two weeks ago and it's long past time to move on and talk about golf."
